Supporting the girls of Acadiana, and beyond, with empowering educational programs!
--Educational workshop focused on healthy hygiene habits.
NO girl wants to be the stinky kid in school (or anywhere else!).
Our interactive workshop was created to stress the importance of daily hygiene practices that ensure the girls have an awareness of physical changes, and a firm understanding of how to prevent odors, as their bodies transition into and through puberty.
We want ALL girls to have the opportunity to know the basics of hygiene, and our workshop facilitators guide them through scenarios, such as: how to properly wash your face, brush your teeth, floss, and apply deodorant, just to name a few.
As an added resource, we provide each girl that attends our workshop with a reference book (The Care and Keeping of You/The Body Book) to answer questions they may have when they get home. Sparking curiosity creates actions! Help us to encourage girls to want to know more!!
Total Running time of 1.5-2 hours. Each girl receives a resource book and multiple hygiene items to make sure they are set up for success as they go home to practice what they have learned.
GIrl Stuff is a closet for an ongoing collection of personal hygiene items, of all types, to give each girl who attends our workshop a way to confidently practice what they have learned. If the girls do not have access to the products that they need, then how can they achieve the goal of understanding?
We will provide hygiene items to any girl who needs them. We also follow up with program coordinators who have allowed us to present the I.Y.K.Y.K. workshop at their facility, to provide the girls with needed items.
Hygiene items that have been distributed: hair products for all hair types and textures, soap (body wash and bars), toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, deodorant, lotion, menstrual care products (pads/tampons/period panties), hair brushes, hair ties, combs, underwear, and socks, just to name a few.
Our bra closet and give-away program has been established, not only to make sure the girls have access to bras, but to also make sure they are wearing the correct size and type for their personal comfort and support.
Educating girls on how to properly wear these garments will allow them a skill that they can share with their family members, friends, and potentially their own children of the future. When our clothes fit properly, and we are comfortable, we feel more confident and not self-conscious.
Let’s keep hygiene fun and reinforce healthy habits for children, ages 4-7, by reading exciting and interactive stories!
Our facilitators provide books focused on hygiene and kindness. The books read are: Smelly Melly: Personal Hygiene for Kids and Monsters by Niki Palmer and Tony Densley, and Hygiene...You Stink by Julia Cook (depending on time-frame of program).
Each book focuses on how not everyone knows what it means to have healthy hygiene, or what to do when it comes to talking to a friend about odors or cleanliness.
These books help the children understand that they should be kind and guide their friends with love.
As part of the interactive exercises, we provide a little monster plush doll to practice what they learn about hygiene as we read Smelly Melly (the monster is for demonstration only). The children will go home with hygiene items to practice what they have learned.
Total Running Time: 1 hour
*This workshop is for all children (not just girls), target age of 4-7, but will accommodate older children if they are interested in participating.
